One of the weirdest horror movies that I have ever seen. Eraserhead is a 1977 film done by David Lynch. With a post apocalyptic setting, we see the main character, Henry find out that he is a father. When the baby is brought home, he and Mary struggle to take care of the alien type creature.
There is a lot of debate as to what this movie is truly about. David Lynch himself has never come out and explained what he had intended it to be about. There are some theories though.
One of them being that it is about Henry trying to figure out if it is alright for him to kill the baby. After Mary brings the baby to live with Henry, you see her stressed out, especially while she is trying to feed the baby and the baby is refusing to eat. After she is woken up in the middle of the night from the baby, she leaves and now Henry is stuck with a sick baby. In my opinion, the main scenes that support this theory are with the lady in the radiator. First, she is shown stepping on, and killing what resemble fetuses, and then later in the movie sings about everything being fine in heaven.
Another theory that I have read about is that it is about sex. The scene with the chicken bleeding might be symbolizing menstruation, the very thing that lead to Mary’s pregnancy, then there is the scene where Henry is pulling fetus type things out of Mary while she is in bed and throwing them against the wall, which kills them, and then finally, there are the scenes with the lady in the radiator, which I had described earlier. These could be scenes arguing against sex, stating that it is bad and leads to bad things such as the pre mature, deformed baby. Then you have the seductive neighbor across the hall, arguing for sex, stating that it is okay and doesn’t lead to bad things.
